Cumberland Memorial Hospital became a Critical Access Hospital on August 19, 2005, licensed for 25 acute care beds, including 3 in The Birthplace, and 10 psychiatric beds.

CMH-ECU continues to upgrade its facilities to meet the changing needs in health care services.

PROGRESS:  Our Evolution

2010 - A total renovation was completed in the following areas: radiology, specialty clinic, emergency room and patient lounges. The renovation of the radiology suite gives our patients access to the latest technology, including digital capabilities. Upon entering the outpatient waiting areas, our patients find a more comfortable, soothing atmosphere, with complimentary beverages, computer/internet access and television. To exceed the needs of our customers and accommodate growth, the physician specialty clinic area was also included. The seven examination rooms offer state-of-the-art equipment and technology from floor to ceiling. There are three renovated emergency rooms that are located adjacent to each other. New cabinetry, flooring and lighting offer enchanced efficiency for our staff so they can focus on patient care. We now have an automatic medication dispensing system that helps caregivers access medications quickly and easily. This system has proven to ensure patient safety and improve clinician efficiency. This project allows us to offer our visitors, patients and guests a truly memorable experience that is completely patient focused in design.

2010 - The courtyard in the center of the facility was renovated to offer a warm and inviting space for nursing home residents, patients and visitors for their enjoyment. Thanks to hundreds of volunteer hours by the Boy Scouts, Master Gardeners and many others, a new open-air gazebo, raised gardens area, walking path and a variety of beautiful plants and flowers add charm and color. The picnic tables, water feature and graceful lines of "The Family" sculpture enhance the area. The walking path winds through the courtyard providing an opportunity to enjoy all its features.

2003 – The remodel of our state of the art Rehabilitation Services Department was completed to better meet the growing needs of our community. With this remodel came  expansion of our rehabilitation services and the introduction of our Wellness Center to the community.

1999 – A 5 million dollar construction project was completed. This project included the creation of the Birthplace, complete with 3 private family-centered birthing suites. Six beds were also added to the Behavioral Health Department (NorthWest Regional Center) and the hospital. During this time Cumberland Clinic was physically connected for the convenience of our patients.

1996 – Property adjacent to the hospital grounds was purchased for use as an ambulance headquarters. Also, CMH-ECU Behavioral Health Department was renamed NorthWest Regional Center.

1993 – Our outpatient behavioral health clinic was built to better serve the needs of the region.

1989 – Lakewood Regency, a 20-unit congregate housing apartment building was completed.

1987 – The remodel of our Behavioral Health Unit was completed.

1980 – A 17,500 square foot addition was completed, providing 20 private occupancy rooms as well as a new surgery suite including 2 operating rooms, recovery, post-anesthesia and equipment sterilization designated areas. 

1968 – In response to the increasing demand for hospital services, 16 medical/surgical unit beds were added along with the administrative wing.

1963 – The Obstetrics area was added.

1956 – The original hospital was completed in order to serve the health care needs of our community.

1955 – Recognizing the need for a new hospital, a group of concerned citizens organized a corporation to plan and construct the Cumberland Memorial Hospital.
